Resources

Cookery is taught to all year 7 students at Carre’s in the fabulous Nutrition Suite, opened in February 2011.  The purpose built room, situated on the first floor above the Fitness Suite, is very well-appointed with modern gas and electric ovens, stainless steel work units, a full range of equipment and ample refrigerator space.

Scheme of work

Throughout the whole academic year students have a one hour cookery lesson each week.   They make a wide range of dishes to develop home cooking skills and learn about food safety and hygiene, healthy eating and consumer awareness. The cultural importance of food is also acknowledged; previously students have celebrated events such as British Food Fortnight and Chinese New Year.

Extracurricular activities

In addition to the year 7 lessons students are encouraged to enter competitions including the Rotary Young Chef and House Cookery.

Enrichment opportunities

Sixth form students are able to learn to cook too and have the opportunity to spend Wednesday afternoons preparing tasty, good value dishes – great experience for when they leave home for university and college.
