On Sunday 27 May 2012, Carre’s Grammar School was the venue for one of the latest developments in junior football; hosting a 5v5 football festival in partnership with the Grantham Youth Football League. The event was open to all local teams and to children who are not currently connected to our clubs. 67 young players took advantage of the opportunity to play in what will now be a regular feature of next season’s GYFL Under 7 and Under 8 fixture programme. AFC Brazil (Newark), Caythorpe & Fulbeck JFC and Heckington JFC all got involved making up 50% of the players with the rest recruited from Carre’s Saturday club and the local schools. With such a high percentage not attached to clubs, there is evidence that players are wanting to play but cannot find suitable formats or clubs. Carre’s and the GYFL are committed to support the Lincolnshire FA in growing the game and feel confident that next season’s formats will help engage more of these children.

Sunday’s event signals the start of a very new era for Under 7 and Under 8 players in the local area. Co-ordinating the event, together with a team of young volunteers, was Carre’s Football Development Manager Matthew Evans. “I was delighted to see so many young players playing this fun, child centred format of the game. It is a great opportunity to develop young players and good football leaders. I am delighted the Grantham Youth League have committed to making these events a regular occasion; highlighting their commitment to child friendly football”. Matthew explained that these latest developments fully support the content of the FA Youth Review “the announcement from the Football Association at Wembley on Monday that the proposals of the FA Youth Review had been adopted by FA shareholders is excellent news but more importantly the GYFL have further demonstrated how prepared and well supported its member clubs will be for the changes”. FA shareholders voted 87% in favour of changes to the game meaning U7 and U8 players will be playing 5v5 and the U11 and U12 groups will be playing 9v9, compulsory, by the 2013/2014 season, one year after the GYFL programmes. Graham Almond, GYFL Charter Standard Co-ordinator, said “From the start of next season, we are supporting our U7 and U8 teams by allowing them to borrow suitable goals, offering all teams that sign up to play 9v9 a set of their own goals and over the course of the coming season we will be consulting our existing age groups to see which formats of the game they would like developing. These are exciting times for young players in our league and we always welcome new players and teams.”
