Further Study and Other Opportunities

Please also see Mr Scholefield, Work Related Learning Coordinator, the library and school emails for further careers related advice and opportunities.

We are about to launch a recruitment campaign for 5 x Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeships for a September 2026 start.

The offer is a permanent contract with the Environment Agency at Grade 3 (£29,751 per annum).  A place at Keele university to get an BSc Environmental Science (Practitioner), studying part-time virtually (one day per week).

 https://www.keele.ac.uk/apprenticeships/apprenticeshipprogrammes/environmentalpractitioner/- Keele University

This involves going to either two or three block weeks per year (accommodation and travel paid for by the Environment Agency), and then you have one day per week of online lectures and 3 days per week in an EA team – rotating round teams throughout the four or five-year degree.  The fifth day of the week is shared between generic EA employee meetings, mandatory training, individual performance plan work etc. and/or extra study/planning for your degree or your rotations.

All the university fees are paid for by the Environment Agency.  This means no university fees to pay for the next 30 years!

Towards the end of 4 or 5 years of university, you will be supported to move to a team of your choice within the EA, vacancies permitting, of course.  You will remain in the team you started permanently, until you secure a job of your choice in a different team.  This then makes space for further apprenticeship places.

This is aimed at school-leavers with A-levels or recent school-leavers, career changers etc.

We will be offering sessions for anyone interested to visit the Lincoln office over the coming months, to look round and hear more about the breadth of work that the Environment Agency carries out.  Further details about the apprenticeship will also be available at that point.

It is envisaged that the vacancies will go live in November, and the advert will be live probably until the end of January.  Interviews are intended to be carried out in the Easter Holidays, to allow existing students not to have to miss any school time.

If you have any questions or want more information – email Recruitment.LNA@environment-agency.gov.uk

Leeds Futures – Applications open

We have now opened applications for our Leeds Futures subject-specific outreach programmes and would be grateful if you could signpost your year 12s to this opportunity.

We run a range of Leeds Futures programmes in Arts and Humanities, Environment, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and STEM and full details can be found on the Leeds Futures website   https://www.leeds.ac.uk/undergraduate-teachers-supporting-students/doc/leeds-futures

What is Leeds Futures?

Leeds Futures is a national outreach programme designed for individual learners in Year 12/Year 1. The programme consists of a mixture of (mainly) online and in-person activities throughout Year 12 until the point of submitting their UCAS application in Year 13/Year 2.

Leeds Futures is free of charge and priority is given to applicants who meet certain widening participation criteria. The programme provides students with the opportunity to learn more about a subject area they are interested in pursuing at university, whilst developing their study skills and career awareness. Students attend a variety of subject-related activities alongside receiving advice and guidance on practical matters such as UCAS applications, accommodation choices and student finance.

This programme is ideal for students who have a clear idea of what subject they are interested in studying at university and have a preference for mainly online sessions with at least one on-campus visit held at the University of Leeds.

The University of Cambridge - Trinity Hall

Cambridge from the Inside is a podcast about outreach and admissions at the University of Cambridge, hosted by Trinity Hall. It explores admissions advice and student life at Cambridge through interviews with current students, admissions tutors, and academics. You can find the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube - Cambridge from the Inside #1: Introductions | University of Cambridge

We’ve recorded several episodes offering advice for anyone preparing for a Cambridge interview. If any students have been invited to interview, the podcast supports them with preparations. What makes a good Cambridge interview?? / University of Cambridge

You’ll Fit In is a webinar series and residential programme for Year 12 students in the UK from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds. The central aim of the programme is to both support students with all aspects of the admissions process but also to reassure applicants that, if they were to apply and obtain an offer, they would not feel out of place socially while studying at Cambridge.

For full details on the programme, including the link to sign up, please visit our website: https://www.trinhall.cam.ac.uk/study-with-us/access-and-outreach/widening-participation/you'll-fit-in/

Cambridge Applicants

You will normally receive two interviews, but at some colleges they may conduct theirs as a single, longer interview instead. In either case, you’ll be interviewed for a similar amount of time – around 35–50 minutes in total. Typically, this is highlighted on the college’s website, either on the subject page on their website, the applying section or the current applicants’ information section. It’s always worth reading these as they can be helpful in this way. Don’t read the information for other colleges – it is not relevant to you.

  • Applicant Webinar Series - www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/applicant-webinars
  • Interviews Information Page - www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/cambridge-interviews

Oxford Applicants

  • Check the interview timetable www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/guide/interviews/interview-timetable2: for an idea of dates in your subject. This will also tell you when you would hear about any additional interviews if called for them during the interview period.
  • Check the technology requirements for your subject www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/guide/interviews – you may still be waiting to hear, but you can check this ahead of time.

Useful for both!

Sample interview videos: do not limit yourself just to those that are specific to your subject, or your university – Oxford and Cambridge conduct interviews similarly and so you should make use of resources from both. Also, looking at videos of similar subjects can be helpful for getting a better of interviews generally too.

When looking at any that are subject specific, or similar enough to yours, consider pausing the video as questions are asked and consider your own response before you continue playing to see how it goes in the example!

  • Oxford Demonstration Interview Videos www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford/guide/interviews and sample questions (same link)
  • Sample Videos - www.christs.cam.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/how-apply/application-support-uk-students/sample-interview
  • Oxplore https://oxplore.org – broad and interesting questions you can use as a discussion point
  • Iwanttostudyengineering https://i-want-to-study-engineering.org – Maths and Physics problems at the level of interviews
  • Keep reading around your subject and taking opportunities to practice applying your knowledge and skills, such as working on problems, reading articles or books, watching online talks or listening to podcasts and so on – just as you have been doing in preparing to apply.

Beyond this, make sure you are getting sufficient rest, are eating well and staying hydrated, as well as taking time to relax and unwind. These all lay important groundwork to help you perform at your best – much more so than trying to learn specific additional content, cramming stuff and similar.

If you have been invited to the interview, we wish you the very best – remember you can only try your best and do try to enjoy it! You’ll learn something new and be pushed with your thinking and take this as an opportunity to see if the small group teaching style is for you too. Remember that each interview is a separate point of assessment if you have more than one, so try to only focus on the one you’re in.

Best wishes,

Ellie & Andrew
